Trail Software

I use several pieces of software that I find helpful in planning hikes, organizing tracks, and tagging photos.

  • I use TopoFusion for all of my track creation, editing and organizing tasks.
  • Google Earth is wonderful software for visualizing completed and future hikes
  • I use Exifer to edit the EXIF data of my photographs ie. adding copyright, descriptions and tags.
  • Location Stamper is a free tool offered my Microsoft to GeoTag your photos using the track from a GPS unit.
  • I recently discovered GPS Visualizer for Track Profile Creation
  • Another tool I just found is from the USGS Store The Map Locator and Downloader A very handy tool to locate topographic quads and download high quality pdf's

Just a note
As a recent partial convert to Ubuntu Linux, I am finding it VERY difficult to locate GEO software. There does not seem to be any equivalent to TopoFusion in the Linux world, Google Earth for Linux does not run at all on my hardware, the exif editors (the 1 or 2 I can find) pale in comparison to Exifer. I have located a working geotagger but with the lack of all of the supporting software it is pointless. So, for now, I have to remain a dual-booter :-( If you are aware of ANY linux equivalent to the above software please contact me at MikeOnTheTrail Thanks in advance!''
